Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! We are back to a normal written blog for the remainder of my posts. This week’s blog is all about the debate over tattoos and employment. While there are careers that are more accepting of tattoos, there are still some fields that are not. Times have changed and people’s perceptions of those with tattoos have changed, though.
Then
Back when tattooing branched away from being just culturally significant and more where anyone could get one, tattoos were associated with criminals and the unemployed. If you had a tattoo, you were deemed by society that you were once a criminal and are unemployed. It didn’t matter what you had to say about yourself otherwise. It was, and still can be, a stereotype. The only other people that had tattoos during this time were those either in or retired from the war. You knew who they were though because, their tattoos were war related as opposed to other tattoos. Even well after this time, tattoos were still looked at as trashy and only worn by criminals or the unemployed. It hasn’t been until fairly recently that tattoos have become more mainstream and accepted in the workplace.
Now
Tattoos have become more popular among the general population recently. With the rise in popularity, it is starting to become harder and harder to find people that don’t have at least one tattoo. While some are smaller and easier to hide, there are many people that have larger tattoos that are harder to hide or are very noticeable. This rise in popularity has also led to employers and companies loosening their tattoo policies or eliminating them all together. Many companies have become more accepting of things like piercings, tattoos, and unnatural hair colors. They care more about the employee as a worker than how they look. That being said, companies may make people cover or not hire those with offensive tattoos. Companies have noticed the rise in popularity in everyday people getting tattoos. They have learned that they have to begin loosening the policies on tattoos if they want to find employees. There is still much debate about whether tattoos are professional or not especially with the older generations that still associate tattoos with criminals. Overall, the hiring landscape is starting to change in favor of those with tattoos.
Careers
Some careers are more open about tattoos than others because of the level of professionalism in the field or other reasons. Even with these careers, we are starting to see a shift in tattoo policies. The most recent change we are seeing is with the Marines allowing tattoo sleeves finally. Careers in sports, art, IT, some medical careers, and blue-collar jobs are all tattoo friendly and have been for a while. There are more professional careers where you can’t have visible tattoos like law and governmental jobs. These make sense because you want to be viewed as extremely professional and don’t want any distinctive markings that can be used to identify you. Many careers are starting to add themselves to the careers that allow tattoos, though.
Thank you all for coming back to read my latest blog once again! Sadly, next week will be my last blog post. Be sure to come back for the final one where we will be talking about some of the best shops around Richmond, VA.
